Streamlining Manual Yard Management of the World’s Largest Supply Chain

Being one of the largest supply chains with over 500 warehouses, manually managing the high influx of drivers was an uphill battle.
It came with many roadblocks, ranging from missed movements and inaccurate tracking to incomplete operational oversight. Additionally, the substantial labor required to guide drivers to their designated slots across vast areas added to the complexity and inefficiency of yard operations.
With the constant loading and unloading of goods, the lack of visibility into which trailers were associated with which shipments further complicated operations. The FMCG urgently needed a smarter solution to track trailers entering the facility and accurately log all relevant carrier information. This could provide the much-needed control to manage the chaos, ensuring smooth coordination of goods and trailers across their expansive network.

Our Project Challenges

1
Serving Diverse Yard Personnel

The FMCG’s large facilities required timely updates and coordination between different yard personnel. Owing to this, our team had to ensure seamless integration between the different interfaces for drivers, validators, carriers, and spotters.

2
Sustaining Top-tier Performance Standards

Keeping in mind the extensiveness of the facilities, we had to make sure the system could scale a substantial number of drivers, validators and spotters simultaneously while preserving optimal performance.

3
Maintaining Peak Operation Execution

To achieve instantaneous operation executions, we strived to maintain a less than 1-second response time, including rendering text and images.

4
Global Adaptability and Multilingual Support

As the system was designed for a multinational FMCG, APPWRK’s web development team ensured that the application was compatible across regions while incorporating multilingual support.

How Partnership With The Largest FMCG Led to Efficient Yard Operations for Over 500+ Warehouses in 150+ Countries

With a mission to strategically develop a custom YMS solution to enhance the supply chain ecosystem, APPWRK’s web application development team worked extensively to bring the system to life. We meticulously designed the application around their specific workflows, transforming tedious manual tasks into instant, streamlined operations for optimal efficiency. We built four interfaces for yard personnel: drivers, validators, spotters and carriers.

With a simple click on their smartphones, tablets, or laptops, drivers were able to have a pleasant check into the facility and receive instant notifications and directions to their designated loading areas. The application also hosted a ‘scenario selection’ option for the drivers to choose between ‘Outbound Driver’ and ‘Inbound Driver’. A third-party API called IDScan verified every driver’s license for liability protection and to ensure they are legally permitted to operate vehicles.

The multifaceted application empowered validators to approve driver entry, ensuring no unauthorized personnel gained access to the facilities. It also allowed the cross-verification of the details entered by the driver and viewing the status of their check-in and check-out.

Spotters also benefited from real-time updates, allowing them to update the trailer movements that they have shifted to the designated location. The yard management system also helped them manage check-out requests and update the yard check details.

The Impact of Intelliyard

APPWRK’s development team thoughtfully engineered this browser-based application using our profound web application development skills and the latest technical advancements. By automating facility access and trailer movements, this Yard Management System has lowered manual intervention, reduced demurrage charges from carriers, eliminated room for manual error and put an end to dwell time across expansive warehouses. Automated data entry with secure cross-verification has made the supply chain ecosystem secure, with no room for unauthorized access. The YMS also helped with improved communication among yard personnel, facilitating better coordination and ease of movement. This web application has proved to be a great ally in significantly improving the yard logistics for world’s largest FMCG and aiding their growing needs.
